After seeing many myspace privacy issues on TV and two youtube video’s (one here & one below" showing teens what can happen when you post stuff on myspace I decided, maybe some parents need a guide on how to block myspace (even adults aren’t safe using myspace, see this newspaper article). Alternatively you should talk to your children, know what there doing on the net, walk past now and then and look at the windows they have open and ask "what is that…"

Windows: (Mac version coming soon)
Step2. For Windows XP type: notepad C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS into the run command
For Windows 2000 type: notepad C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS into the run command
For Windows 98/ME type: notepad C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS into the run command
For Mac OS 9: look in System Folder:Preferences for the Hosts file and use a text editor to add the additional lines.
For Mac OSX: look for the hosts file in /etc/hosts
Step3. Double click "hosts" and open with notepad.
Step 3: Goto the end of the hosts file to get ready to past some code.
Step 4: Past the following code below and save. If You have antivirus or firewall it may ask you to allow or accept changes made to the host file.

Although this will not block proxy sites for most computer literate people it will stop most children. You may still get to myspace using googles cache sytem but they won’t be able to log in and view profiles etc..
If i have missed something or you would like help on blocking myspace let me know, I’ll usually reply within one hour

Do you know how to block myspace on a MAC?
Yes i do
Look above at the updated post…
Do you know where I can find the same for facebook please
thanks peter
No, but i can tell you how to block any site using this similar method. Instead of putting the following in your host file put this instead
# block thesite.com
127.0.0.1
Now you can also ping face book and block its ip by going to start->run->type cmd->type ping http://www.facebook.com and then add the ip to your host file like this:
# block thesite.com
127.0.0.1 204.15.20.26
Let me know how you go.
I tried the same for the MAC (G4 OS 10.3.9). I found the hosts file by using Go>Go to folder> and typed in etc/. I double clicked the hosts file which opened in TextEdit. Added the sites you listed. When I tried to save the file, I get the message stating you can’t, do I want to authenticate. I am the administrator and entered my password. Then it states it still can’t be written. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? I tried GetInfo on the hosts file to change the read only, but it’s grayed out.
Thanks, Robert
Ok, try disabling your firewalls and antivirus’s, they may be stopping the host file from being edited.
Ok, so it works and everything but how can I get it back. It worked on a friend’s computer but I want to do it on mine now, but revert hers back to its original state. You can email me. Thanks VK.
Thanks VK, all I had to do was restart.
I used this and it worked! thanks! However what if I decide I want assesse to it again? Can this be removed?? If so how??
hi mate, it sure can, just delete those lines back out of the host file and it should be good to go again.
cheers

VK, I have been trying for a year to disable the site at my home computer. Myspace is not a great site for teenagers these days.
